Isle of Man: Mit einer „blanket license“ gegen Musikpiraten?

Musik-Piraterie im Internet ärgert die Plattenindustrie, ist aber nur schwer zu bekämpfen. Deswegen wird zurzeit in mehreren europäischen Ländern die „Kulturflatrate“ diskutiert. Damit könnten Songs und Filme gegen ein monatliches Entgelt ganz legal heruntergeladen werden. Nach den gescheiterten Versuchen in England und Frankreich, könnte sich das Modell jetzt auf der Isle of Man durchsetzen. Die New York Times berichtet von dem Stand der Verhandlungen mit den Labels; der Vorstoß soll insbesondere dazu dienen, illegalem Filesharing den Boden zu entziehen:

„The island, a rainy outpost in the Irish Sea, is promoting an offbeat remedy for digital piracy, which the music labels blame for billions of dollars in lost sales. Instead of fighting file-sharing, the local government wants to embrace it — and it is trying to enlist a skeptical music industry’s help. […] New services offering “free” music, bundled into the cost of a broadband subscription or financed by advertising, are proliferating. “On the drawing board, these are very virtuous models, but it’s all about getting the right implementation,” said Michael Nash, executive vice president for digital strategy and business development at Warner Music. “You don’t want to completely displace all your existing consumers and end up with a lower-value model.”“
